All mine

On the flight west last May for my job interview, all of America had clear skies except for western Colorado. From John F. Kennedy in New York to Bob Hope International in Burbank, nothing but sunshine. I was listening to XM radio on the jet Blue flight and had the most incredible feeling; like America was all mine.

As I rolled my suitcase from the Burbank terminal to the Avis desk, I heard a rare but familiar growl building in intensity.

“It can’t be,” I thought as it grew deafening.

But it was.

Right there on a Tuesday afternoon, a  P-51 Mustang, one of fewer than 160 still flying on earth, roared past on takeoff.

If you are not a person who would recognize a Mustang by its sound alone, I pity you. Get yourself to an airshow and you'll get an education.

So that’s when I decided: I WANT IT.

Not the Mustang. Well, yes the Mustang, duh. I meant I want California.

Now, really, I knew this when I was 14 in San Francisco (heretofore referred to as Serencisco), and again in the Sierra Nevadas in 1992 and 1993 when I was in the marines.

And it’s weird, I wanted it like I wanted that girl I knew I really couldn’t get when I was in 10th grade. The one I could barely stand to look at because she was so beautiful and SO not ever going to be with me.

As I drove into the Antelope Valley (The AV), I just looked around and everything, every rock formation, every Joshua tree, all of it was so beautiful, I could barely stand to look at it in case it wasn’t going to be mine.

I mean, it looks like this there:

Actually, that's Lake Elizabeth, about 10 miles away, The AV looks more like this

But still...

So we worked it out that we’re going. We’re ready. We are going to miss everyone desperately, but we’ve decided that we will be in California for the next 1 to 50 years, depending on how we like it. So come visit us if you can, or come visit here on this site until you can, but we'll be in California for a while.

All our love and best wishes go with you both, though I'd like to hear that Kelly is as enthused as you obviously are!

I remember your reaction to the week you spent in Li'ermore, CA with Uncle Stan and the boys, 20 years ago, and it doesn't surprise me at all that you'd accept this assignment.

"You've chosen to go a different way and isn't it luvly!"

Best wishes and keep us posted.

PS: Your mother probably won't get out there until late September. (You were safe in the Marine Corps, she can get to you in Palmdale!)

I am so excited for you. I will also visit you although I'm not sure when, the NCSS Conference is in San Diego but that is way south from you. This will make day trips difficult to say the least. When do you move?

Thanks, everyone!! Visiting is VERY welcome and expected! This year ahead, I doubt we will get home much, as we will be saving for a ridiculously expensive little ranch house with a pool and riding Piddy Ting (my motorcycle) all over CA to get our bearings.

I think the picture of the apartment looks like something from HGTV. Good luck househunting. Add more cat pictures.

Well, I actually grew up in the sixties. I feel very lucky, actually, that that was my slice of time that I was dealt. Let's remember that the real motivation in the sixties, and even in the fifties, was the Cold War.
