Maintenance day
I didn't do much today except get things ready for Kelly and Amanda to get here. One interesting thing about the desert is that clothes driers work really well. I took a nice walk around the apartment complex today too.
A guy named Ryan who works at PetSmart chatted me up for about 15 minutes when I was buying litter, food, and a litter box para Los Shuebose. Ryan suggested I get everything at Walmart because it's cheaper. PetSmart should really reconsider their relationship with Ryan.
The Walmart here has this constant, hideous beeping sound near the entrance/checkout area. I thought it was just something the first time I was there, but the last time I went it was still beeping. If you want to keep me away from someplace, irritating noises are a sure bet. So I ignored the advice and bought the stuff where I was.
Ryan also suggested that I go to Trader Joe's, the world's absolute dumbest grocery store. I went there looking for pizza ingredients the other day and I found everything I needed except sauce. Oh, and pepperoni. There also wasn't any dough or pre-made crusts. Yeah, and there wasn't any mozzarella cheese either. If you want sad looking vegetables and sushi made sometime last week, there's plenty of that. And I think everything sold there includes sun-dried tomatoes. That must be the true sign of gourmet, if it has sun-dried tomatoes. Everything else is just ordinary.
A coworker invited me to Costco, which was an experience. It's like Sam's Club but there they pay their workers a living wage and give them benefits. I don't know about warehouse places. Even the vitamins came in huge containers.

I have gotten two unsolicited compliments on my rental Buick Lucern. But I find it boring and not too good on gas. The controls are not intuitive to me at all, even after more than a week. Worst of all, the shifter sticks and I have to almost break the plastic to go from D to R and back.
I'm looking forward to having Kelly and the cat here. It's going to be nice to have my truck and to finally be settled with our stuff in the new place.

...UPDATE...Trader Joe's DOES stock items for homemade pizza. I found fresh pizza dough (plain and Italian herb), pizza sauce, meatballs, and cheese. I forgot to look for pepperoni, though. I went there today to shop for dinner for one, and I got what looks like a great stir-fry mix for $3.49 and a bottle of Charles Shaw Shiraz for $1.99. I think I'll have a really nice dinner tonight, courtesy of Trader Joe's.

I know I'm being kind of a snob here, but that wine can't possibly be any good if it's only $1.99.

Actually, wine is drastically overpriced, inflated in value the way Debeers and OPEC have artificially inflated the price of diamonds and oil. I haven't had Two Buck Chuck yet but I'd bet it's as good as most $15-$20 wines. Grape juice wants to become wine, it's really not that complicated to achieve. The article above is really interesting. "Chuck's" creator seems like a pig, but if he can take the artificial snobbishness out of wine and winemaking, good for the world.

I guess my expectation of $2 wine comes from one too many experiences with "wine" like Maddog or Nighttrain. And really, one experience with that crap is enough to be too many.
I read that article. My god that guy is a jerk.
I do have to side with Chuck on the Trader Joe's issue though, at least to some degree. I've always been a little disappointed by them, although they are often a whole lot better than the Krogers or A & P's of the world. But they do always seem to be missing something. It's not quite as severe as, let's say, cereal with no milk, but kind of like that. People were very excited when they opened a few NYC locations recently and I just couldn't get why, especially since Whole Foods is right down the block.

I HATE THE GROCERY STORES HERE!!! Is it too friggin' hard to have shelves stocked with items that haven't expired? Vons, which was going to be the alpha store, decided to stock the shelves with tarter sauce that expired two weeks ago. Luckily, before I consumed it, I noticed the brown coloring of it. I MISS WEGGIES!!!

And I had the experience f finding a pound of mold in my two pounds of frozen potatos a few weeks ago at Albertson's. Something that never happened to me shopping a lifetime at Wegmans.
