Omnivore's hundred

First off, I'm watching the MTV VMAs because I'm a loser, and my gosh does it suck this year. And I have to wonder about the whole rappers wearing pants below the butt thing; hasn't that been going on for over a decade? Don't stupid fads have a half life of like six months? Also, Pink is Kelly's age, so why does she look about 45?

Anyway, this thing's sort of been going around the internet. I think it started here. I'd call it an internet meme if I didn't despise that word and the contrived, arrogant  way in which it was forced into the lexicon.

I've eaten 48 out of the hundred. About five of these I won't ever try. Some of them are too stupid to be on a list like this. But it's fun to remember the ones I've had and to plot out ways to get the ones I want to try. Some of them are things I've never even heard of. Actually a lot of them are.

1. Venison - Yes and highly recommended. Especially the tenderloin, pan fried and finished in a 400 degree oven. Seasoned with nothing but salt and pepper.

2. Nettle tea - Nope, but I will.

3. Huevos rancheros - Nope, but I'll try now.

4. Steak tartare - Nope, but I'll give it a shot.

5. Crocodile - Yeah, Kelly and I had it at a place we called "Lettuce" because they gave you a bucket full of the best salad and another bucket full of the soup of the day. I think it was the Town and Country in Vernon, NY. Crocodile was good, it was deep fried, which means it was good.

6. Black pudding - Nope, but I'll give it a shot. I'm a not too excited about eating blood, but I'd be adventurous.

7. Cheese fondue -  Yeah, but there are several fondue restaurants in the LA area, so we will try again soon. The Melting Pot, I guess is the one to go to.

8. Carp - Nope, and I never will. I hear it tastes like mud. Why bother.

9. Borscht - - Nope, but I'll give it a shot.

10. Baba ghanoush - I must have, but I don't really recall it.

11. Calamari -Oh yeah. Many different ways, from Liverpool, NY to Italy to Taiwan, to Okinawa. I love the tentacles and everything.

12. Pho - Nope, but I'll give it a shot.

13. PB&J sandwich - Duh.

14. Aloo gobi - - Nope, but I'll give it a shot.

15. Hot dog from a street cart -  Oh yeah.

16. Epoisses - Nope, but I'll give it a shot.

17. Black truffle - Nope, and never will, I earned my own money.

18. Fruit wine made from something other than grapes - Black Bear Winery, near Kelly's brother, Michael, has a motto of "everything but grapes" they rock ad make some great wines.

19. Steamed pork buns - Um, no, but that sounds good.

20. Pistachio ice cream - Believe it or not, no. But I will.

21. Heirloom tomatoes -  Oh yeah. The stuff in grocery stores are bred for shelf life and looks alone, not taste.

22. Fresh wild berries -  Mom and I used to go out into the fields behind our house every August for the blackberries. MMMMM.

23. Foie gras -  Yes, a few times, but I don't really get it. It's not all it's cracked up to be.

24. Rice and beans - JJ's friend Angelique makes the best.

25. Brawn, or head cheese - Great Grandma Prayther was a big fan and Grandma Shannon and I sed to break her out of the nursing home and take her to this one deli on the Canadian shore of the Niagara River, just north of Fort Erie. It's actually very good.

26. Raw Scotch Bonnet pepper - No, but that sounds like suicide.

27. Dulce de leche - Um, no, but that sounds good.

28. Oysters - Hell yeah. Raw, cooked. Scalloped.

29. Baklava - I've even made it. Every Mediterranean and Middle Eastern culture claims to have invented it. I's that good.

30. Bagna cauda - Um, no, but that sounds good.

31. Wasabi peas - Mom used to keep some in the dry goods cupboard.

32. Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl - Hell yeah, baby.

33. Salted lassi - I've had a mango lassi, Kelly's favorite.

34. Sauerkraut - Dad and I have made it in the cellar. Kelly and I both have German roots, so it's in our genes.

35. Root beer float - So good.

36. Cognac with a fat cigar - Absolutely.

37. Clotted cream tea - Mom and Jeffrey's mom have made this. Really good.

38. Vodka jelly/Jell-O - Last at Michael's bachelor party.

39. Gumbo - About monthly.

40. Oxtail - Nope, but I'm overdue.

41. Curried goat - Just last Valentine's Day. Kelly and I always go out for Indian on Valentine's Day. I actually coordinated our visit to San Francisco with Jeffrey immediately after that meal.

42. Whole insects - If they're deep fried, maybe. And salted.

43. Phaal - Sounds good and frightening. But I'd do it.

44. Goat’s milk - My cousins Kurt and Becky  had some milking goats and I loved the milk. I also really like goat cheese.

45. Malt whiskey from a bottle worth £60/$120 or more - Actually no, not at that price. But Michael and I did enjoy some fine whiskeys the winter we were co-unemployed and living at Kelly and Mike's parent's house, waiting for Kelly to come hone and tell us of the outside world.

46. Fugu (pufferfish) - Probably not worth the effort, but if someone else is buying, why not.

47. Chicken tikka masala - As good as they claim.

48. Eel - In Taiwan, smoked. It's good. There's supposedly a guy in the Hudson Valley who smokes the best ever.

49. Krispy Kreme original glazed donut - Yeah, they're like crack.

50. Sea urchin - Only the gonads are edible, so no.

51. Prickly pear - I don't think so, but would.

52. Umeboshi - I don't think so, but would.

53. Abalone - I don't think so, but would.

54. Paneer - It's squeekie and good!

55. McDonald’s Big Mac Meal - Duh. Really the best sandwich.

56. Spaetzle -  Really only at Epcot Germany.

57. Dirty gin martini - It's okay. Doesn't belong on this list.

58. Beer above 8% ABV - Duh. My favorite comes fro Empie Brewery in Armory Squae in Syracuse.

59. Poutine - Why I have never had this is beyond me.

60. Carob chips - I don't think so, but would.

61. S’mores - Not overrated. But I think I've only had one in my life.

62. Sweetbreads - I don't think so, but would.

63. Kaolin - This is clay and while it has its uses, doesn't belong on this list.

64. Currywurst - I would, but it's a dumb addition to this list.

65. Durian - Nope, but I'll try any fruit.

66. Frogs’ legs - No and I'm not in a hurry to try. But I suppose I would.

67. Beignets, churros, elephant ears or funnel cake - All of the above. Kelly is a churro whore.

68. Haggis - I'd eat it if we were in Scotland and I was drinking. Which s to say if we were in Scotland.

69. Fried plantain - Yes, and it's good.

70. Chitterlings, or andouillette - Both and both are worth all the hype.

71. Gazpacho -  Yes, but it is after all just cold soup. Would try again in Spain some day.

72. Caviar and blini - I LOVE even cheap caviar. Actually I've only ever had cheap caviar and I love it.

73. Louche absinthe -  This fascinates me and I must try it some day.

74. Gjetost, or brunost - "Geitost [cheeses] has a strong, sweet, yet somewhat sharp flavor with notes of caramel and goat's milk" how could that be bad? I want some. Never had.

75. Roadkill - Have had (venison) , is a stupid addition to this list and call all of it into question.

76. Baijiu - Never had, but it's booze, so I'm sure I will.

77. Hostess Fruit Pie - One of my favorite things to see manufactured. I want one now. Apple.

78. Snail - Though all of my family suggested, I never ate the ones in my back yard. My dad and I did get escagot as room service while we visited Ottawa when I was 14. It was good, but sauté anything in butter and garlic, then put it on toast with cheese, and charge $20 for it, and it's bound to be good.

79. Lapsang souchong - Smoked tea. Never had it but why not?

80. Bellini - Sure.

81. Tom yum - Sadly, no, but I really want to try it now.

82. Eggs Benedict - Yeah, it's good. I prefer not to eat it at restaurants, though, since there's no place like home for the hollandaise.

83. Pocky - No, but doesn't sound like a top 100 food. I'd eat it.

84. Tasting menu at a three-Michelin-star restaurant - Once in New Jersey.

85. Kobe beef - Tragically, never had this. My life will not be complete until I do.

86. Hare - Yeah, they served it about once a month when I was in the Marines. It' very good. Like chicken but more so.

87. Goulash - Never liked it. Maybe it's not the right stuff. What's described on the wikipedia page sounds good.

88. Flowers - Yeah, but none seemed like too bi of a deal.

89. Horse - I haven't but actually would. It's really popular in Sardinia, where I spent a week in 2004, that was probably the right time to try it. The US is a huge exporter of horse meat and horses for slaughter.

90. Criollo chocolate - Kelly hates chocolate, so I don't get much of it. I's try this if someone else bought.

91. Spam - Yeah, doesn't belong on this list, which I just noticed doesn't have any bacon on it.

92. Soft shell crab - Yum-o.

93. Rose harissa - Surprisingly, no, but that sounds good.

94. Catfish - This was a weekly staple in the Marines. Yum.

95. Mole poblano - I've been really remiss in my Mexican cuisine in California.

96. Bagel and lox - Actually no. I must my next trip to NYC.

97. Lobster Thermidor - Never and I hate myself for that.

98. Polenta - Yeah, but the taste of polenta varies so widely from tasteless to fabulous, so you kind of have to be more specific.

99. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee - Never, but if someone else is buying...

100. Snake - I'm not sure I ever did. I would.
