Yo, I'm Palin, I'M OUT!
I'm sitting on the couch reading news on the laptop and half watching a recording of The Soup when I read that Sarah Palin made a surprise visit to Saturday Night Live and that it was very funny. I thought "oh, too bad I missed that" because seeing the clips on the NBC site sucks and YouTube seems to have become 90% rickrolls, which have never been funny.
Then I realized that I'm on the West Coast and it's only 11:15 here, so I have time to tune in and record it. The opening bit with Palin, Tina Fey, Lorin Michaels, and Alec Baldwin was awesome. The moment when Palin and Fey passed on stage is among the best moments in television history, with both women performing flawlessly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mO9ThqDLU0A This will probably not be up long (that's what she said).
It seemed odd to me that Baldwin had to read a teleprompter, don't actors know how to memorize lines?
Anyway, after that two minutes of television bliss, the real show started. Now, if you had a show that was fading and failing but gained sudden relevance because of the remarkable resemblance of a former cast member/writer to a polarizing but charismatic candidate for vice president and her talent to nail her mannerisms, don't you think you'd put your best show in front of the windfall audience to try to win some of them over?
But the first skit was the kind of skit that you expect to see at 12:50, not 11:35. It was the kind of skit that, when better talent was available, almost didn't earn its way onto the show. What annoyed me more than the skit was hearing the infomercial-like audience who seemed to be able to laugh at *anything*. I'd mark it up to them just being star struck, except that Amy Poehler is the only person on that cast that I've ever heard of. Maybe these people have been paying attention over the past decade, which I have not, since Will Farrel probably did the last funny thing there.
Poehler's Palin rap was a hoot. But remember, Poehler is leaving the cast soon.
My standards are pretty low, but I had to switch the channel because I was embarrassed for the cast.
I just have to wonder, if Obama/Biden win, or if Fey remembers she has a real day job, will Saturday Night Live survive?

You just reminded me to watch this on the NBC site, and the player there isn't so bad. (It used to be TERRIBLE, but I'm guessing they've upgraded.)
I only watched the Palin bits and the part with Mark Wahlberg (because I also wondered what that bit about the other week), but, anyway, very funny. It's nice to see that Palin has a sense of humor, but I'd rather she was smart.

I think I was the only one who wached anything more than the Palin bits, which is the whole problem with SNL. Sarah and Tina are all they have.
Sarah is really a twit. I actually think she is smart, which is to say she has aptitude, but I think she's closed minded, which is way worse than being stupid.

Have you ever actually watched a full episode from the "good old days" of SNL? The percentage of funny to not so much is pretty much the same now as it was then. Pick any cast from any year and put them head to head, most of the time they are pretty even.

True, as many people have foretold the end of SNL wrongly as have predicted the begining of the end of times wrongly.

Who is this "Palin" character you all keep referencing and how did I not know Mark Wahlberg's abs, er I mean, Mark Wahlberg, was on SNL this week??
Just Kidding, Dad!
I can't wait for this freaking election to be over with. At this point, I'd rather start thinking about the 2012 election.
I'm awake now. Just maybe a little too late.

In Denver, I had a rental with XM Radio, but for some reason, it would only get three stations, POTUS '08(Politics of the US in 2008(for the people of the US)), a country station, and a sports station. So I listened to POTUS '08 all week, which airs any of the speeches of anyone in the campaigns. So I heard several of Biden's, Palin's, McCain's, and former President Clinton's speeches. Some of them I heard more than one version of, since they did them in multiple locations. One thing it did for me was realize how much these people travel and perform, like hearing Palin in Pennsylvania in the evening, then hearing her in morning in Colorado, then later in New Hampshire (I may be confusing candidates).
Anyway, NO ONE gives a speech like B. Clinton. He was amazing, but McCain and Palin, I think really struck all the right messages this week and had a much clearer front than recently.
Biden also not only gives a good speech, but can improve drastically from one to another, as I heard two versions of the same speech in one day and he did WAY better the second time, though the first was good too. Of all the candidates, Biden is the one I want as a friend, not that that is a criteria for my vote. Obama gave by far the wost speech of anyone I heard this week. He was just not clear in message and not as inspiring as he can be.
Anyway, though I swore at the radio for being broken, I'm glad I listened to the POTUS '08 station constantly.
