Fall in the desert

I was in Denver since Tuesday. Like a moron, I forgot my camera, but I met up with a friend I used to work with in Syracuse who is going to email me some of his photos next week. Colorado is nice. We got a little bit of snow while I was there. I saw a dusting on the ground and some in the air.

It's really hard to find fault with Colorado, I had high expectations and it actually exceeded them.

We haven't seen snow here in the AV yet, not even on the mountain tops, but there have been some cold nights and a few cool days.

But there are, if not four, at least three and a half seasons here. And Fall is definitely becoming evident.

Here, in the ever-present sun, Fall almost seems to be a result of eight months of sun exposure on the leaves, rather than waning daylight and cooler evenings.

We got one really light frost, but it was not even enough to kill my peppers. I've had the fire going a few nights, but most nights are still in the 50s, meaning that with the ambient heat of a household, we still have the windows open. One night, though, I thought it was going to be cool enough to keep the windows closed, but warm enough to keep the heat off, but I woke up with a numb exposed arm above the covers.

This time of year, if you can't catch a breeze, you can have days where you will run the air conditioning from 4-6 pm and the heat from 10 pm to 8 am.

Mostly though, it's just a matter of sailing what I like to call the Earth Ship. You  just have to know the right sail settings for the time of day. When you get home in the evening, open all the windows and turn the ceiling fans on. Then about 7 pm, close up the upstairs windows and keep the downstairs open to let some of the cooking heat out. Then about 7:30, close everything. Keep a good blanket on the bed, then have the heat come on at 4 am. In the morning, open the shades as the sun comes up. When leaving for work, close the shades (unless the high temp is going to be <60 degrees) and turn off the heat. Repeat and modify as necessary for conditions.

If you're lazy or not proactive, you can control with a/c and heat, but it's more mindful to sail the Earth Ship this time of year.
