Fire down below

I'm sure it made national news, so you've probably heard that fires have consumed hundreds of houses in LA and surrounding suburbs. The fires effectively cut us off from the world, as almost all the roads and freeways to get to LA were closed.

The fire in Santa Clarita was the closest an uncontrollable fire has been to us, it was probably only 30 miles away.

We went out to Fox Field in Lancaster to watch the fire bombers take off and refill to fly out over the San Gabriel Mountains and douse the fires.

This seriously has to be the coolest job ever. Doing low level bombing runs to save rather than kill people.

They have to fly out over these mountains.

While the planes were out, the ground crew kept the dust down.

Kelly got chased by tumble weed.

Everybody holds firemen in high regard, but Californians worship theirs. They fight fires with everything from shovels and bulldozers to bombers and helicopters equipped with infrared cameras to find hot spots to attack. I would join up if I was a little younger.

The fires aren't all out yet, but they made good progress yesterday and they think no more structures are threatened. Amazingly, no one got killed, but a few firefighters got hurt.

Video!!

Also, the musical road is on the way out to Fox Field. You must have sound on to appreciate.
